BP SELLS ASSETS FOR OIL CLEAN UP
Linklaters has taken a lead role for BP on the $US650 million ($668 million) sale of four Gulf of Mexico oil wells, reports the Am Law Daily. The sale to Japanese trading company Marubeni is the next move under BP's strategy to sell $30 billion worth of assets to offset the growing costs of cleaning up the Gulf of Mexico following the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig disaster in April.
STUDENT DROPS HECKLER SUIT
A gay student president at the University of Michigan has dropped a request for a protection order against a lawyer who apparently heckled his speeches and criticised him on a blog, reports law.com. Chris Armstrong's lawyer notified the court he would be withdrawing the request, in which Armstrong had accused Assistant Attorney-General Andrew Shirvell of showing up at campus appearances with a sign reading "racist" and "liar" and labelling him as someone with a "radical homosexual agenda".
TWO MORE FOR EVERSHEDS DENMARK
Eversheds has appointed two partners in Copenhagen, Denmark, to replace former senior partner Troels Askerud, reports The Lawyer. Partners Sam Jalaei and Nikolaj Juhl Hansen will share the role of senior office partner after Askerud announced earlier this month he would be leaving the firm. Following a strategic review, up to one dozen employees will leave the Copenhagen office.
NEW RANK FOR UK FIRM
UK firm Macfarlanes has introduced a "senior solicitor" rank for up-and-coming lawyers, reports legalweek.com. Associates with at least six years' PQE will be eligible to take up the position. The firm's first senior solicitors are set to be promoted in 2011, with candidates put forward by practice group heads. Those associates already involved in firm activities such as training and business development will likely be considered first for promotion.
