A new centre named after former High Court Justice and human rights advocate Michael Kirby has been established to address the interaction of human rights and health.
Justice Kirby said the centre will have a particular interest on the impact of HIV/AIDS.
"It's going to be in part directed at the vulnerable communities in the frontline of the AIDS epidemic," Kirby told ABC News.
"That means men who have sex with men, injecting drug workers, sex workers, refugees, and other groups of that kind who are very vulnerable to the HIV virus."
The Centre, which includes lawyers, ethicists, medical practitioners, scientists and researchers, aims to conduct research that informs the development of public health policies and programs in which human rights standards are critically considered.
The Centre will also undertake teaching programs and make a practical contribution to the promotion of public health and human rights.
