Lawyers from both sides of politics have come to the aid of the Governor-General and the Coalition to provide legal guidance on a potential hung parliament.

The Australian has reported today (26 August) that the Coalition is talking to David Bennett QC, a former solicitor-general for the Howard government.

Opposition legal affairs spokesperson Senator George Brandis has requested advice from Bennett on a hung parliament, as well as guidance on the "general constitutional position" that the Governor-General Quentin Bryce may soon face.

Bryce has in turn picked up the services of Solicitor-General Stephen Gageler on concerns regarding a potential conflict of interest in any decision she might play in determining the future Government - given her daughter is married to Labor MP Bill Shorten.

Shorten married the Governor-General's daughter, Chloe, last year.
