Former Mallesons corporate partner Peter Cook has left the top-tier firm to join Gilbert + Tobin.

The private equity and M&A specialist officially started with the corporate transactions group at Gilbert +Tobin this month.

This move is a further signal to the market of Gilbert +Tobin managing partner Danny Gilbert's oft-stated ambition to challenge the dominance of the six "top-tier" firms.

Cook, the lead partner on Chinalco's ultimately unsuccessful investment in Rio Tinto, has been a leading corporate lawyer in the Australian market for many years.

Cook's appointment was one of four partner appointments announced by Gilbert +Tobin. As reported by Lawyers Weekly last week, Ken Saurajen, Elizabeth Avery and Ros O'Mally have been promoted into partner positions. Both Avery and O'Mally will be part-time partners.
