Legal assistance services in regional and remote Western Australia will receive over $1 million in extra support from the Government, announced this week by the Federal Attorney-General.
Also receiving extra support is the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia, with the Government announcing an additional $620,000 as a one-off to assist it in finalising cases arising out of the Western Australian Indigenous Justice Taskforce.
Addressing the Family Violence Prevention Legal Services (FVPLS) annual conference in Western Australia, Attorney-General Robert McClelland also announced this week a $3 million boost to family violence prevention services across Australia.
The funding will assist FVPLS, Women's Legal Services and Indigenous Women's Projects to lodge victim's compensation claims; provide legal and related support to victims to ensure their rights are protected; and increase the awareness of services through improved resources and community legal education initiatives.
In 2009-10 FVPLS received $19.4 million from the Australian Government to provide legal advice, assistance and related services to Indigenous victims of family violence in 31 regional and remote locations across Australia.
