In the wake of the Northern Territory intervention, The Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has released draft guidelines for ensuring income management measures comply with the Racial Discrimination Act 1975.
Race Discrimination Commission Graeme Innes said that income management, in relation to the distribution of welfare payments in both Indigenous and general communities around Australia, has become a topical issue following the Northern Territory Intervention.
"The intention of these guidelines is to provide assistance for ensuring that income management schemes, wherever they are implemented, do not discriminate against people on the basis of race," he said.
The AHRC is seeking feedback on the draft guidelines until 12 February 2010. They can be downloaded from the AHRC's website.
