Freehills recently sponsored the Australia India Joint Business Council Summit, held in Melbourne on 20 May. Freehills is looking to promote its own expertise in the region, which is hotly tipped as the “next big thing” in the international legal market.

Kamal Nath, India’s Minister for Commerce and Industry, led a high-level business delegation of senior executives from leading Indian companies. The delegates met with Simon Crean, Minister of Trade for Australia, and senior Australian company executives.

The summit aimed to provide “a forum for the highest level of dialogue between Australia and India” and attendees discussed trade and investment opportunities between the two countries.

Philip Christensen, a partner in Freehills’ Brisbane office, presented a paper at the summit on investing in mining and resources, outlining the law regulating foreign investment in Australia with emphasis on the mining sector and the basic scope of government policy, including the Foreign Acquisition and Takeovers Act 1975 (Cth).

More than 50 senior executives and government officials accompanied Minister Nath to Australia. The delegation included senior representatives from the mining, infrastructure development, food processing, ICT and education sectors.
