The fact that lawyers sometimes have to work long hours is not exactly ground-breaking news, but do their pay packets adequately compensate them for giving up their weeknights and weekends?

According to Lawyers Weeklys latest news poll, a considerable majority of lawyers don’t think they are. Thirty two per cent of respondents feel that while they do have to put in the hours, that’s part and parcel of the job and their pay reflects that. However that leaves 72 per cent of respondents who believe they are not properly compensated for the hard yards they put in.

Perhaps lawyers are filling out this survey when they’re back at work at 2am, tired and grumpy, trying to polish off a letter of advice for an impatient client. Then again, it’s possible that some law firms are genuinely underestimating the true value of weekends.
