The Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) and the Law Society of Hong Kong signalled their commitment to building closer ties on Thursday April 9, signing a Memorandum of Understanding in Hong Kong.

LIV President Danny Barlow said that more and more Australian legal practitioners have sought to expand their practices by opening Hong Kong offices in recent years, and the agreement reflected this trend.

"This agreement will grow these opportunities by developing reciprocal member services and improved communication links between our two societies," he said.

Barlow also emphasised the importance of forging strong international relationships in the current turbulent economic climate.

"During a global economic downturn it is important to look for opportunities to grow business and create working relationships," he said.

Hong Kong Law Society President Lester Huang said it was hoped that the two societies could collaborate on initiatives for lawyers who wish to pursue international opportunities in either country.

"The legal profession in all countries faces common issues and by sharing expertise and experience we can help one another provide better services to our members," Huang said.
