The Australia Day Honours role announcements on January 26 recognised members of the legal profession for contributions to their country and to the law, law reform and service to the judiciary.

Human rights campaigners featured prominently in the list, with human rights lawyer and prominent activist Marion Le made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). Barrister and refugee rights advocate Julian Burnside QC was made an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO).

The Hon Richard Chisholm was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) "for service to the judiciary, to the law and legal education, particularly in the field of family law and the welfare and rights of children and young people". The Hon Acting Justice Ronald Sackville QC was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) "for service to the administration of the Australian judicial system, to the reform of federal and state law, and to legal education".

Dr Philip Opas OBE QC was posthumously appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) "for service to the law through state and federal government review boards and tribunals, as a practitioner, and to the community through a range of charitable, historical and sporting organisations".

Edward Bramble - service to the law, Sutherland Shire.

Erskine Rodan - human rights law and advocacy.

Officer of the Order of Australia (AO)

Brian l Crommelin - service to the law and to legal education, through the development of mining and petroleum law in Australia.

Kevin Hammond - service to the law, criminal trial procedures and corruption investigation.

The Honourable Justice Bernard Teague - service to the judiciary and to the law.

Member of the Order of Australia (AM)

The Honourable Justice Anthony Cullinane - service to the judiciary and to the law

Annemaree Lanteri - family law

Philip Opas - service to the law, state and federal government review boards and tribunals

Patrick Parkinson - family and child protection law

Peter Short - legal education, ethics and community
