Dear Lawyer2B,
With an increasing number of firms employing graduates from their clerks, I think it is crucial that students make an educated decision in applying to a firm suited to them.
Students are aware of this, and are becoming nervous that they may have to individually research firms to determine which firms appeal to them.
This year, we were limited to our annual “Meet the Legal Profession” evening where members of the legal profession mingled with students at a “drinks and canapés” event.
The evening was a success, but it does not replace the opportunities of an exhibition-type event where the firms’ practice areas, size and values are clearly displayed and able to be taken home in a handy promotional pack.
Law students are in competition for jobs; it benefits the students and the firms when students apply for a firm suited to them.
I think it is imperative that students are offered a careers fair-type event, with a wider range of firms, prior to next year’s penultimate students applying for clerkships.
