SLATER & GORDON has announced that it will probably advise residents of Brooklands Greens Estate, in Cranbourne, Victoria, to commence a class action against the City of Casey.

Residents from about 250 houses in the estate have been evacuated from their homes because of fears of an explosion resulting from a methane gas leak from a disused tip.

According to Slater & Gordon, residents were told — prior to purchasing their homes — that the Stevensons Road tip would be rehabilitated and turned into a recreational area and they were not informed of the risk of the leak.

The class action would seek compensation for out-of-pocket expenses, distress and diminution of property values and would be undertaken by Slater & Gordon on a “no win, no fee basis”. In a statement released last week, the firm said it had received hundreds of inquiries from concerned residents.
