Prue Burns (pictured), who most recently served as the head of financial crime governance, controls and monitoring at Westpac, and was also a partner at Maddocks for 11 years, has joined Josef.

Working for a legaltech start-up is “new ground” for Ms Burns, Josef noted in a statement, but added that her experience leading a legal practice combined with her work in investment banking compliance, risk management and large-scale transformations “will provide a strong foundation” for new role.

She has “always had her eye” on the start-up ecosystem, she noted, and doing the Startmate Fellowship last year exposed her to “an incredibly collaborative and supportive community that elevated my appreciation of what might be possible”.

Speaking about the appointment, Josef chief executive and co-founder Tom Dreyfus said that Ms Burns is the sort of leader “that start-ups usually only dream of hiring”.

“For a legaltech company like Josef, that’s even more true. With her law firm and corporate experience, she not only brings deep domain expertise in the law, but also in the problems that our customers are solving with Josef’s automation platform,” he said.

Her experience and passion for bringing the best out of people, Mr Dreyfus continued, mean that the company has “exactly what we need, as Josef continues to scale our global team and customer base”.

Ms Burns added: “The opportunity to join Josef excited me for many reasons, but key in my decision making was the calibre and energy of the founders, Tom, Sam and Kirill.

“I was drawn to the clever simplicity of Josef’s no-code platform, which is capable of automating complex legal documents and processes. I built my first bot in my first week which proves how simple it is.”

Ms Burns joins Josef following its recent funding round of $2.5 million.
