Adelaide students encouraged towards regional legal careers
To combat how often valuable career options in regional towns alongside Aboriginal communities are overlooked by new law graduates, eight Adelaide students met with Indigenous elders to learn about the complex challenges within the justice system.

The eight Adelaide Law School students and the South Australian Law Reform Commission (SALRI) were invited to Port Pirie and Port Augusta to consider more diverse law careers outside the traditional spaces and learn the benefits of moving into regional towns to assist Indigenous communities with their new legal knowledge.
The students – Chloe Winter, Arissa Robles-Rangel, Christina Akele, Charlotte Ordynski, Izak Coombe, Jack Woolford, Mitchell Dunn and Cayleigh Stock – were first introduced to the Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement (ALRM) and heard from lawyers, local Indigenous elders and members of Aboriginal communities.
From there, they met with local lawyers Paul Boylan, Shelley Anderson, Pamela Badcock and John Voumard as well as the Honourable Geoff Brock MP and deputy mayor Alan Zubrinich to hear about working and living in Port Pirie and the nature and breadth of regional and rural legal practice within both towns.
Coinciding with this, SALRI conducted various follow-up consultation meetings with Aboriginal communities, service providers and local lawyers on its present reference into the role and operation of communication partners to help parties with complex communication needs in the legal process, the Adelaide Law School noted.
SALRI deputy director Dr David Plater commented: “Our thanks to all who took part and supported this wonderful and very successful trip and a special thanks for the enthusiasm and commitment of the intrepid law students.”
