THE FALLING number of complaints against solicitors investigated by the Law Society of New South Wales can be attributed to its keeping the profession well-informed, according to Society president Gordon Salier.

The Society says this is being achieved by providing not only factual information but also increasing lawyers’ awareness about their personal responsibilities and the importance of ethical values.

Through regular columns in the Law Society Journal, designed to remind solicitors of basic practice principles, as well as the Professional Responsibilities and Regulation website and seminars and talks, the Society is educating solicitors about their responsibilities as legal professionals.

As a result, the number of complaints dealt with by the Society’s Professional Conduct Committee has decreased, as have the number of requests for a review of committee decisions by the Legal Services Commissioner.
