MEMBERS OF the legal profession from across the Asia Pacific region will next month descend on the Gold Coast for the 16th annual POLA Conference, being held in conjunction with LAWASIAdownunder2005.

POLA (Presidents of Law Associations in Asia), is expected to attract about 50 delegates from the region, including India, China and the Solomon Islands. They are expected to discuss and debate the major policy issues affecting the legal profession and the law in this region.

This year, the theme of the conference will be Independence of the Legal Profession, which will look at the separation of powers, international terrorism, money laundering, the impact of globalisation, multi-disciplinary practices and pro bono work.

“The POLA Conference will provide a unique opportunity for lawyers in the Asia Pacific region to fully discuss these issues and more,” said chair of the LAWASIAdownunder2005 organising committee Glenn Ferguson.
