THE EVOLUTION of High Court thinking about tax avoidance was the focus of a lecture by Queens Counsel Allan Myers at the University of Melbourne last week.

The lecture looked at the period from Sir Garfield Barwick’s retirement as Chief Justice to the Court’s recent landmark decision concerning the general anti-avoidance provision in Commissioner of Taxation v Hart. The talk, ‘Tax Avoidance and the Hight Court since Sir Garfield Barwick” is the inaugural public lecture in a series of tax lectures hosted by the Melbourne Law School, which will focus on taxation law in context and look at the development of taxation law from a legal and historical perspective.

Myers is a QC in all states and territories and is a barrister in England and Papua New Guinea.
