DAMIEN DWYER was appointed as a new Queensland magistrate last week. He was appointed to the Cairns Magistrates Court, one of Queensland’s busiest, a move that increased the number of permanent magistrates in Cairns.
He had also acted as the legal officer for the Mackay and District Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Corporation for Legal Aid Services and is currently a volunteer at the Mackay Regional Community Legal Centre.
Welford said it was to Dwyer’s credit that he had dedicated considerable time to his local community, and had taken on key business and community roles.
“This broad life experience, coupled with his formal qualifications as a barrister, will make [Dwyer] a great asset to the bench,” Welford said.
