Former Victorian treasurer Alan Stockdale will head Mills Oakley Lawyers’ workplace relations practice and contribute to the firm’s development through a role in its leadership team.
An added attraction was the firm’s “positive expansion plans for the next few years” and the role for Stockdale in its leadership team. “I’m not just going back to practice, but building,” he said.
Stockdale’s credentials include 10 years as a practising barrister, during which time he represented employers in negotiations and appearances in the Federal Court, and before Commonwealth and state industrial tribunals. Major cases included the national wage case and the BLF de-registration case. He was national personnel and industrial relations manager for Leighton Contractors for five years and has worked for various employer organisations in advisory and advocacy roles.
Throughout his time in the State Parliament and Victorian Government, from 1985 to 1999, he was involved in various workplace relations issues and employment law reform. For the past six years he has worked on major infrastructure and other transactions at Macquarie Bank and overseas.
He will continue his association with Macquarie Bank and Macquarie Infrastructure Group in his new position and will handle issues involving Highway 407 in Canada as well as a range of other projects.
Stockdale said he did consider returning to the Bar, but had found over the duration of his career that he enjoyed working in the corporate environment. “I had worked with senior people at Mills and we seemed a good fit,” he said.
“My time as a lawyer was one of the most satisfying phases of my previous career and, I must say, I am very excited about returning to the law.”

Stockdale said he was looking forward to working as part of a team and drawing on the mix of skills within the firm. “I enjoyed my time at the Bar — it’s a fantastic institution and has a cooperative ethos, more than people think,” he said.
