Chris Maxwell QC, a former Legal Aid Commissioner and former president of Liberty Victoria, has been appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria and president of the Court of Appeal, both effective 16 July 2005.

Maxwell, who joined the Victorian Bar in 1984 and took silk in 1998, was admitted as a solicitor and barrister of the Victorian Supreme Court in 1979. He practised with Phillips Fox and Masel in Melbourne, having previously practised in London for a short time as a member of Lincoln’s Inn. In London, he read with David Blunt QC of the Middle Temple and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1978.

Maxwell graduated in law in 1984 from the University of Melbourne. Previously, he graduated with first class honour in philosophy and history, also from Melbourne, and was the 1975 Rhodes Scholar for Victoria. He also holds a Bachelor of Philosophy from Oxford. Prior to joining the Victorian Bar, he was principal private secretary to Senator Gareth Evans, then Commonwealth Attorney-General.

“Mr Maxwell has had a distinguished career at the Bar, and we warmly congratulate him on these two appointments,” Senior Vice-Chairman of the Victorian Bar, Kate McMillan SC, said.
