LIV hosts forum on keeping privates private
The "Keeping your Privates Private" forum is to be held on Thursday (8 September) and will address client and employee rights to privacy; how information is collected, stored and used; workplace email and social media monitoring; rights to privacy under the Charter; and the right to be informed when under surveillance.
The pros and cons of the introduction of a tort of invasion of privacy will be considered, as well as the use of social media by recruiting firms and employers when assessing job applicants.
The 2010 proposal for a mandatory internet filter will be debated alongside the proposal to record and retain the internet browser history of all Australian internet users.
Speakers include Professor Neil Rees of the Victorian Law Reform Commission; Sandip Mukerjea, a senior associate of Minter Ellison lawyers; Helen Versey, the Victorian Privacy Commissioner; and Professor Sarah Joseph, the director of the Castan Centre for Human rights.
Speakers will consider controversial questions and scenarios like: 'what rights do I have against Google and Facebook to have information removed?', and 'if I blog about my boss and get fired for it, is that a valid dismissal?' in the hope of inspiring debate about privacy rights, laws and philosophies.
LIV is also hosting a forum entitled 'A Lawyer's Guide to the Apple iPad - Paperless and Efficient' On Wednesday (7 September).
