Steelmaker and iron ore miner Arrium, which is based in Whyalla, SA, has been placed into voluntary administration by its directors, putting more than 8,000 jobs at risk nationwide, according to the ABC.

The Legal Services Commission of South Australia (legal aid) has announced extra legal assistance in Whyalla to help some of Arrium’s 3,000 SA-based employees and contractors.

Legal Services Commission of South Australia chairman Michael Abbott AO QC (pictured) visited Whyalla less than 12 months ago to consult community leaders about their legal needs.

"With government backing, we stand ready to increase the legal assistance we provide to the people of this community,” Mr Abbott said.

“Legal aid has an office in Whyalla with local lawyers ready to give advice on the numerous legal enquiries people may have as the government considers the future of Arrium.”

Mr Abbott said they will be better able to provide free advice, information and assistance for Whyalla residents facing a range of legal problems.

“Big, sudden economic and social changes often result in families having to confront significant legal problems,” Mr Abbott said.

“On a financial level, these problems can relate to mortgage, property and tenancy matters, as well as issues concerning debt, credit contracts and consumer law difficulties.

“We also offer family law legal help, advice regarding child support assessment and assistance for separating parents who are trying to reach agreement on the care of their children.”
