AN INFLUENTIAL UK lawyer and international arbitrator has challenged Australia’s businesses and legal communities to work together on problems in the litigation system, which he claims prevent commercial outcomes.

Arthur Marriott QC, Britain’s first Queen’s Counsel and a London-based partner of US law firm LeBoeuf Lamb, is a key supporter of UK legislative reform in the area of arbitration. He gave this year’s International Arbitration lecture in the Supreme Court of NSW.

A long-standing advocate of the need for reforms to promote the settlement of disputes, Marriott drew on his own experiences as an international commercial arbitrator and barrister to address the topic ‘Breaking the Dispute Deadlock’. The annual lecture is a joint initiative of law firm Clayton Utz and the University of Sydney.
