AFCA welcomes senior lawyer as board member
The Australian Financial Complaints Authority has appointed a practising lawyer with over 25 years of experience as a new member of its independent board.
Jonathon Hunyor (pictured) has joined the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) board as a director, effective 1 January 2025.
With over 25 years of experience as a practising lawyer, AFCA shared that Hunyor has extensive knowledge of various legal domains, including discrimination, human rights, Aboriginal land rights, administrative, criminal, and coronial law.
In addition to his legal practice, Hunyor currently serves as the CEO of the Justice and Equity Centre, a leading independent law and policy centre dedicated to supporting disadvantaged individuals and protecting human rights.
He also currently holds positions on the boards of the Australian Pro Bono Centre and Community Legal Centres NSW.
AFCA’s board chair, Professor John Pollaers OAM, expressed enthusiasm regarding Hunyor’s appointment, commending his extensive legal expertise and demonstrated leadership capabilities.
“With his legal expertise and proven leadership in advancing consumer rights, Jonathon will bring a unique and valuable perspective to our mission,” Pollaers said.
“He has extensive experience working with socially, culturally and linguistically diverse groups, which is extremely beneficial for our work as an ombudsman service that serves all members of the community.”
Pollaers also expressed his confidence that Hunyor’s expertise would strengthen AFCA’s ability to advocate for consumers and drive meaningful outcomes.
“Jonathon’s commitment to equity and justice aligns perfectly to our goals, and we are confident that his contribution will help drive meaningful outcomes for the community,” Pollaers said.
Hunyor will assume the position previously held by Gerard Brody, who has been a member of the AFCA board since 2023. Brody is stepping down to accept the full-time role of chair of the Essential Services Commission in Victoria.
