The QS World University Rankings have revealed the top universities for law and legal studies globally, with six Australian universities making their mark in the top 100.
The leading universities worldwide to complete a law degree have been uncovered with the recent release of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, with several Australian universities securing a place within the top 100.
In the 2025 rankings, three Australian universities soared into the top 25, while a total of seven universities featured in the top 100 of universities offering law and legal studies.
The Australian universities that made the top 100 are:
The University of New South Wales (UNSW) – ranked 12th, the same position as the previous year.
The University of Melbourne – ranked 13th, down from 10th the previous year.
The University of Sydney – ranked 18th, down from 16th the previous year.
Australian National University (ANU) – ranked 26th, down from 25th the previous year.
Monash University – ranked 39th, down from 26th the previous year.
University of Technology Sydney (UTS) – ranked 79th, down from 68th the previous year.
This marks the first time the UNSW law faculty has achieved the top spot among all Australian universities since QS began evaluating universities based on specific subjects.
Celebrating this significant milestone, NSW Law & Justice’s dean, Professor Andrew Lynch, said: “Every single member of the faculty should feel immensely proud of how consistently we perform in international rankings, but especially today when we are recognised as first in Australia.”
The University of Adelaide and the University of Western Australia are both ranked within the 101 to 140 range.
Meanwhile, Griffith University, Macquarie University, the University of Newcastle, Deakin University, La Trobe University, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), and the University of Wollongong are placed in the 201-250 range.
The universities that made up the top five positions in the QS 2025 rankings are as follows: Harvard University, the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, Yale University, and Stanford University. Notably, this ranking is in the same order as last year’s top five.
