In the first of our 'Ex Curia' video series, looking at the lawyers' interests and passions that lie outside the legal realm, we speak with Baker & McKenzie's National Managing Partner, Chris Freeland, about his role as chairman of the Sydney Film Festival.

Ahead of the opening of the festival on Wednesday, June 8, Lawyers Weekly sat down with Freeland and Festival Director Clare Stewart, to chat about their favourite cinematic moments, the importance films play in bringing to light issues of justice and human rights, the highlights of this year's festival, as well as a few tips on how to beat Hollywood icons at giant Jenga.

Freeland, who was appointed as the festival's chairman in February 2010 while at his previous position at Gilbert + Tobin, also discusses his life-long love of the cinematic arts, stemming from his childhood when his father would present lounge room screenings of Jacques Tati classics, such as Monsieur Hulot's Holiday, and how his current role with the festival has contributed to a reawakened creativity in his legal career.
