Last August, Lucy Terracall travelled to New York to attend the American Bar Association's annual meeting after an invitation from their young lawyers division. A lawyer in the Melbourne office of Clayton Utz, Terracall was also appointed president of the Young Lawyers' Section of the Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) and a member of the LIV Council in 2008.

Terracall chose to pursue a career in law because she believed it would combine all the things she loved at high school - English, literature, languages and drama. She obtained a double degree in arts and law from Deakin University, gained international experience studying in Germany and worked as a commercial paralegal at Clifford Chance and Freshfields in London.

From there, Terracall began her career at Ebsworth & Ebsworth before commencing at Clayton Utz in November 2007 in the insurance team. She says she enjoys the team dynamic and the varied and challenging work she is involved in.

"I have also always enjoyed a good argument and realised quite early on that I was good at communicating with people. I could actually talk before I could walk," she says.

For now, Terracall's priority is to stay in private practice for the mid-to-long-term, but she has learnt from past experience that anything can happen.

"I would also like to continue my involvement with activities outside of work. My current role as a councillor and director of the LIV has taught me so much about the legal profession and current legal issues. I think the things I do outside of work give me perspective and remind me that the legal profession in Australia is very diverse," she says.
