K&L Gates has added a partner from rival global law firm White & Case, who brings more than 25 years of legal expertise to the firm.

Matthew Osborne joins the firm’s Melbourne office in the energy, infrastructure, and resources practice, with a focus on project development and finance.

Osborne was at White & Case for more than eight years, where he was a partner in its south-east Asia project development and finance group and head of the Philippines country group. He has also held roles at other top-tier BigLaw firms, including as a partner at Herbert Smith Freehills in Singapore.

This news comes after the addition of a partner from Norton Rose Fulbright in February, as well as the firm’s hiring of an IP partner from Corrs Chambers Westgarth in January.

Osborne has advised grantors, sponsors, JV participants, and financiers across the central Asia and Asia-Pacific regions on the delivery of major power, infrastructure, and construction projects, particularly in the energy, resources, utilities, and transport sectors. He also works closely with owners and investors in relation to significant M&A transactions and has practised in both Australia and Singapore – something Australia regional managing partner Jason Opperman would be beneficial to the firm.

“We are delighted to welcome Matthew to the firm. He has stellar credentials and is well known for delivering innovative energy solutions in both developed and emerging markets across the central Asia and Asia-Pacific regions, specifically on large infrastructure projects in the Philippines.

“With demand for energy and complex infrastructure growing, Matthew’s valuable knowledge and networks will enhance our ability to advise clients across these sectors,” Opperman said.

John Crossley, a leader of K&L Gates’ energy, infrastructure, and resources practice, said: “Matthew has a strong track record of delivering strategic, commercial, and innovative solutions to his clients. We are thrilled to have someone of his calibre join our global EIR practice. His experience and connections complement our existing capabilities and bolster our ability to support global energy and infrastructure clients.”
