A&O Shearman has elevated 33 lawyers across 11 countries and 16 offices to its partnership, including three Down Under.

In Australia, the firm’s newest partners are Jackson Allen (energy, natural resources, and infrastructure, Perth), Jackie Donald (M&A, Perth), and Simone Lowes (M&A, Sydney).

The promotions are effective as of 1 May 2025.

The news follows the completion of the merger between Allen & Overy and Shearman & Sterling to create A&O Shearman in May last year. The firm then ledged to cut 10 per cent of its partners during this financial year in September.

More recently, the global firm was among 20 BigLaw firms targeted by the Trump administration over its diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) practices. As has been reported widely, A&O Shearman then struck a deal with the White House to commit to US$125 million in free legal services and to “merit-based hiring, promotion, and retention”, according to Trump.

Speaking about the promotions, A&O Shearman senior partner Khalid Garousha said: “It is immensely gratifying to promote from within and recognise the hard work and dedication of our new partners.

“Their talent will be instrumental in helping us deliver innovative and high-quality solutions to the complex challenges our clients face. I look forward to seeing the impact they will make as we continue to strengthen our capabilities and shape the future of our firm.”

The firm’s executive committee and board co-chair and US chair, Adam Hakki, said: “Congratulations to all of our new partners. Each one of them has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to excellence and best-in-class service to our clients.

“Their promotions recognise their significant contributions and reinforce the depth and breadth of talent within our firm. They will play an important role in realising our vision to be the global elite law firm, serving the most sophisticated clients in their most significant work.”

A&O Shearman managing partner Hervé Ekué said: “These promotions underscore our focus on nurturing and growing our talent pipeline, which is central to our culture and strategy. Our new partners have consistently demonstrated a strong track record [of] supporting clients across industries and exemplify the collaborative spirit that defines our firm.

“The geographical spread of these promotions reflects our continued investment in developing our market-leading offering across markets, products, and sectors.”
