Global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills has appointed 19 new partners worldwide, including eight Down Under. The firm says the new Australian partners will boost its private capital, energy, and digital offerings.

Earlier this month, the partnerships of both Herbert Smith Freehills and Kramer Levin – a New York City-headquartered firm with more than 300 lawyers – voted in favour of becoming “the first truly transatlantic and transpacific law firm combination”, which the firms said will have “unmatched” bench strength Down Under.

Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, the firms noted at the time, will be “transformational”, becoming a top 20 firm globally, with approximately 2,700 lawyers, including circa 630 partners across 26 offices, and more than US$2 billion in revenue.

The merger was first unveiled back in November.

Following this development, HSF has moved to bolster its senior ranks, appointing 19 new partners worldwide, including eight in Australia.

The Australia-based appointments are an investment, the BigLaw firm said, in its private capital, energy, and digital expertise, including – for the first time – the promotion of a lawyer to partner in its digital legal delivery practice as HSF looks to grow its emerging tech and digital legal advisory offering.

The eight new partners in Australia are Emily Coghlan (digital legal delivery, Melbourne), Michael D’Agostino and Madeleine Miller (projects, energy, and infrastructure, Melbourne), Gabby Herron-Cartwright (finance, Brisbane), Tamanna Islam and Li-Lian Yeo (corporate, Sydney), Geoff Kerrigan (corporate, Perth), and Eunice Park (disputes, Sydney).

The new partners will assume their roles on 1 May.

The global promotions round follows the BigLaw firm’s hiring of 23 lateral partners, to date, in the current financial year, including Andrew Leadston from Corrs Chambers Westgarth (reported earlier this week), Cassandra Wee and Amit Jois from Ashurst and Johnson Winter Slattery, respectively, in October, and Jay Prasad from Allens in September.

Speaking about the promotions, the firm’s executive partner in Asia and Australia, Kristin Stammer, said: “We are excited about what these new partners bring to our firm, including their technical expertise, commerciality, and exceptional client service.

“Our investment in our partnership continues our focus on being leading in Australia and captures opportunities to support growth in key areas, including private capital and energy.”

Additionally, Stammer went on, the appointment of Coghlan to partner in the digital legal delivery practice group “is another step in our history of leading on digital investment and innovation to deliver digital solutions to our clients”.

“It is fantastic to be able to recognise our people for their exceptional legal skills and commerciality through this year’s partner promotions,” she said.

HSF global chief executive Justin D’Agostino added: “I am delighted to welcome our new cohort of exceptionally talented lawyers into the partnership.

“As we embrace an exciting future as Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, our new partners enable us to build on our existing strengths and to add depth to our global offering and client relationships. I am confident they will achieve great success as partners.”

The firm’s chair and senior partner, Rebecca Maslen-Stannage, said: “Our new partners demonstrate our ongoing commitment to invest in and promote exceptional talent.

“A key priority for the firm is to ensure we provide our lawyers with opportunities to develop and progress. The new partners each play an important role in helping to shape our success as a firm.

“I am excited for our future together and congratulate them on this significant achievement.”
