Global law firm Clifford Chance has appointed a new managing partner to oversee its Australian offices, who will assume the role in May.
Clifford Chance has named Mark Currell (pictured) its new managing partner for Australia, succeeding Richard Gordon, who has led the firm’s Australian operations for over eight years and will conclude his second term in April 2025.
He will oversee the global law firm’s two Australian offices, based in Perth and Sydney, and will “continue to support the firm on regional strategic initiatives”.
Currell joined Clifford Chance as a partner in 2018 from Herbert Smith Freehills and currently serves as the head of the firm’s corporate practice in Australia.
During his seven years with the firm, Currell has been recognised for playing a “pivotal role in establishing and building both the firm’s M&A team and our cross-practice, multijurisdictional specialist private capital team”.
Currell will assume the position of managing partner on 1 May 2025.
Speaking about his upcoming transition, Currell expressed that he is honoured to step into the new role and is optimistic about the opportunities ahead for the firm.
“I look forward to taking on this role and working with our exceptional teams to drive the best outcomes for our clients and continued strategic growth across our core practice areas,” Currell said.
Outgoing managing partner Richard Gordon praised Currell’s appointment, describing his “collaborative leadership style and dedication” as key qualities that will make him “well positioned” to successfully lead the firm through its “next phase of growth in Australia”.
Connie Heng, the regional managing partner for the Asia-Pacific region, expressed that Gordon has “played a pivotal role” while he has held the role of managing partner by “taking our Australian practice from strength to strength”.
“I look forward to benefiting from the valuable knowledge and insights of both Richard and Mark as we leverage opportunities in the current business environment and advance our strategic priorities,” Heng said.
The news follows the naming of Shane Bilardi as the country managing partner in Australia at fellow global law firm DLA Piper back in November.
