A record investment of $19 million has been granted to 16 Victorian community legal services.
Sixteen community legal centres across Victoria have shared in a part of a $19.3 million investment through the Victorian Legal Services Board’s (VLSB) grants program, Attorney-General Sonya Kilkenny announced.
“Every Victorian deserves fair and accessible legal support – no matter who they are, where they live or what their circumstances are,” Kilkenny said.
“By funding these critical programs, we’re ensuring more Victorians can get the help they need to navigate the legal system – from housing justice to family violence support, these grants will make a real difference in people’s lives.”
The Advocacy and Rights Centre received $2.7 million of the share for its project, “Collaborate for Change: Advancing Justice in Regional Victoria”.
The centre intends to bring together six regional community legal centres to improve housing justice services in rural and remote areas.
A further $2 million will go to both the Peninsula Community Legal Centre and Southside Justice and South East Community Links’ REACHHer Pilot to support women who fled family violence and provide access to legal, financial and housing services.
Locals will also receive support from the $1 million each provided to Peninsula CLC, Refugee and Immigration Legal Centre, South-East Monash Legal Services, Hume Riverina Community Legal Service, and West Heidelberg Community Legal.
The Mental Health Legal Centre will also receive $1 million to assist those with psychological disabilities find secure and safe housing.
VLSB chief executive officer and commissioner Fiona McLeay said the grants program has grown.
Since 2007, it has provided funding to innovative projects and has supported people with complex problems who struggle to access the legal help they need.
“I look forward to seeing the far-reaching outcomes delivered by all our successful grantees as they work tirelessly to improve access to justice for Victorians,” McLeay said.
