Darren Marx (pictured) has joined Moray & Agnew in its Melbourne-based property practice.

He brings, the firm said, over 26 years of experience in private legal practice, the majority of which has been as a partner. He advises on all aspects of property development, sales, acquisitions, and leasing, with a particular focus on leisure and hospitality, including hotels, pubs, gaming, restaurants, sporting clubs, resorts, and tourism projects.

Most recently, he served as chief legal counsel at Kokoda Property Group, and before that, he was a partner at Rigby Cooke for almost 13 years.

The news follows the firm’s appointment of a former KPMG director as a new property partner in mid-January, its elevation of 17 lawyers to more senior roles at the start of January, appointment of a new medical negligence partner at the end of 2024, the addition of an insurance partner in Western Australia last year and a property partner in Melbourne in August, as well as the firm’s promotion of 26 lawyers, including five to partner, in early July and the addition of a new corporate and commercial partner from rival BigLaw firm Mills Oakley in June.

Speaking about his new role, Marx said: “I’m excited to join Moray & Agnew and eager to work with such a talented and dedicated state and national property team.

“With my extensive experience across all areas of property law, I look forward to contributing to the firm’s ongoing growth and success while helping our clients navigate the ever-evolving property sector. The firm’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and client-centred service aligns perfectly with my values and professional goals.”

The firm’s Melbourne managing partner, Bill Papastergiadis, said: “Darren’s appointment significantly strengthens our firm’s leadership and collective expertise in the property law sector and services we provide our clients. In addition to his extensive general property experience, Darren has specific expertise in planning and liquor licensing issues.

“This strategic expansion of our property team underscores our ongoing commitment to providing outstanding outcomes for our clients. We are committed at Moray & Agnew to developing a top-tier property and construction team. We have significant depth in expertise and equally clients that respect the quality of work practised and the extensive range of legal services we now provide.”

Moray & Agnew now has more than 110 partners across its offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Newcastle, Perth, and Cairns.
