The Attorney-General has appointed Simon Grant as a full-time member of the National Native Title Tribunal (NNTT), as well as eight new members of the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART).

Grant is currently the judicial registrar, native title, at the Federal Court of Australia and has been appointed for a five-year term and will work closely with First Nations peoples as well as non-Indigenous Australians to “assist with the negotiation of First Nations land use agreements, facilitate the resolution of disputes about proposed future acts (such as the grant of a mining lease) or native title claims, and contribute to broader community education of native title”, according to A-G Mark Dreyfus KC MP.

“Mr Grant was identified through a merit-based selection process. His expertise in conducting native title mediations will be an asset to the tribunal, and I congratulate him on his appointment,” he said.

This appointment comes as part of the government’s 2024–25 budget measures to improve outcomes at all stages of the native title process.

In addition, eight new general members have been appointed to the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) for two- and three-year terms.

Those general members are Holly Casey, Brendan Fox, Timothy Griffin, Professor Susan Harris Rimmer, Len Jaffit, Sandra Koller, Aneita McGregor and Anne Trengove.
