David Holland has joined DLA Piper as a partner in its M&A practice and will be based in Sydney.

He commences in his new role next Monday (24 February).

Holland, DLA Piper said in a statement, advises major corporate organisations as well as government entities on proposed trade sales, purchases, and initial public offerings. He has a practice that focuses on M&A, corporate and securities law, private company acquisitions, public company takeovers, Australian Securities Exchange rules, capital raisings, securities issues, and corporate governance and compliance.

He has come across from global rival Hogan Lovells, which made the decision to exit Australia last September.

Since that time, partners from the firm have landed at BigLaw practices across the board, such as banking and finance partner Bryan Paisley joining Baker McKenzie in January and corporate partners Charles Bogle and James Wood being appointed at Jones Day later that month.

The news also follows DLA Piper’s appointment of a finance partner from White & Case one month ago.

Speaking about the appointment, incoming Australian managing partner Shane Bilardi – who was appointed to his new role in November – said the firm “advises on more M&A deals than any other law firm in the world, a position we have maintained for 15 years running”.

“We are focused on ensuring our Australian corporate practice complements our global strength, and growing a strong M&A team locally is a key part of that,” he said.

“David is well respected for his strong client relationships and client-focused approach and has acted on some of Australia’s largest merger transactions in recent years.”

The firm’s Australian head of corporate, Jyoti Singh, said: “With an extensive background, exceptional client relationships, and notable leadership skills, David brings a wealth of experience and expertise. We are confident that his contributions will drive our continued success and growth.”

Holland said: “I am thrilled to join DLA Piper and look forward to contributing to the firm’s success.

“I am particularly excited about the opportunity to collaborate across teams and leverage our collective expertise to deliver exceptional results for our clients.”

Late last year, Bilardi and incumbent Australian managing partner Amber Matthews appeared on The Lawyers Weekly Show to discuss DLA Piper’s future Down Under, including how it is positioning itself in a competitive market.
