New judge elected to Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia
A judge praised for her “tireless” commitment to the legal profession and the field of family law has been appointed to division one of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia.
Di Simpson was appointed judge of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA) after a career spent dedicated to achieving “significant and impactful developments in family law”, according to Law Council of Australia’s president Greg McIntyre SC.
“From my own personal experience working with Di, I believe she is an exceptional appointment,” McIntyre said.
“Her knowledge of the law, empathy, grace, and sound judgement will serve those who come before her well. On behalf of the national legal profession, I congratulate Di on her appointment.”
The ACT Bar Association also acknowledged the “lasting impact” Justice Smith’s contributions have had on family law, access to justice, and protection from violence for vulnerable Australians.
In 2007, Justice Simpson was instrumental in forming DDCS Lawyers in the ACT, which the Bar said was built on a “foundation of shared goals and values” and was guided by a “strong culture of client service excellence and a refusal to settle for the status quo”.
“Justice Simpson has always been a tireless advocate for those facing some of the most challenging and vulnerable circumstances in family law,” ACT Bar Council president Brodie Buckland said.
“Her dedication to reform and access to justice has made an indelible mark on the profession.
“In every sense, Justice Simpson has been a leader of our profession.”
