Thomson Geer to take 2 teams from Clyde & Co
National law firm Thomson Geer is set to welcome a construction partner and a financial services regulatory partner and their teams, all from global practice Clyde & Co, in the new year.
Construction partner Phillip Coady and financial services regulatory partner Liam Hennessy are set to join Thomson Geer’s Sydney and Brisbane offices, respectively, and will bring their teams to the national firm.
Between them, Coady and Hennessy will bring around 14 senior and junior lawyers. The two partners and their teams will be joining Thomson Geer in 2025.
Coady has been a partner at Clyde & Co for nearly three years and has served as its head of projects and construction since November 2023. He was formerly a partner at Vincent Young, senior legal counsel at LendLease Engineering, and a senior associate at Clayton Utz.
He advises, Thomson Geer outlined, on the full life cycle of construction projects, including dispute resolution, across the infrastructure and energy and natural resources sectors.
Hennessy has been a partner at Clyde & Co for almost two years, prior to which he was a partner at Gadens and served in senior roles at King & Wood Mallesons and Clifford Chance. He also serves as an adjunct professor at Griffith University in Queensland, lecturing on financial service regulation.
He has, Thomson Geer said, extensive experience in advising on digital assets such as cryptocurrencies and NFTs. His practice also includes advising on the establishment of wholesale and retail funds and associated advice, assisting insurance and superannuation funds with Financial Accountability Regime implementation, and all other aspects of financial services advice.
Hennessy also recently appeared on The Lawyers Weekly Show, discussing central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and their future in Australia.
The news follows the firm’s appointment of a technology and cyber team from national rival HopgoodGanim, as reported earlier this week, its taking of an employment team in Melbourne from KPMG Law in October, as well as the firm’s promotion of 50 professionals in early July and its merger with Tottle Partners in Perth in May.
Speaking about the pending arrival of the two partners and their teams, Thomson Geer chief executive partner Adrian Tembel said: “We look forward to welcoming Phillip, Liam, and their teams to Thomson Geer.
“Our domestic strength, the simplicity of how we operate and our competitiveness is highly attractive to partners like Phillip and Liam. We think by coming to Thomson Geer they have found a firm that will assist them to reach their full potential.”
Thomson Geer has over 750 staff, including more than 150 partners, across its national offices located in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, and Canberra.
