HWL Ebsworth Lawyers has bolstered its corporate and commercial team in Sydney with the addition of a new partner and head of the firm’s venture capital practice.

Jason Maletic joins from Ashurst, where he was previously the co-head of the venture capital and high-growth team in Australia. He has extensive VC experience and specialises in advising strategic venture capital investors and early-stage companies through to exit.

This comes after the news that HWL Ebsworth had named six new partners and promoted a further 73 in June, following the unveiling of a new leadership and governance structure, first announced in May, under which a board of partners will replace the firm’s existing managing partner model. This came after the tragic news that the firm’s former managing partner, Juan Martinez, had passed away in March.

The firm now comprises 1,665 staff, including 273 partners, 1,012 other legal staff, and 380 support staff in offices in nine locations across the country.

Maletic acts for venture capital funds, early-stage issuers, consortiums, high-net-worth investors, multinational corporations, banks and financial services companies. Chief executive partner Russell Mailler said Maletic would be a valuable addition to the firm.

“Jason’s arrival further reinforces our strong, national corporate and commercial offering, and I’m confident that his wealth of experience in the venture capital sector will add strategic value to our clients,” he said.
