The largest new barristers’ chamber in Queensland has opened on George Street in the heart of Brisbane CBD, situated just a minute away from the nearby courts precinct.

The establishment of George Street Chambers, which houses 30 barristers and six readers, was spearheaded by David de Jersey KC, a practising member of the Brisbane Bar since 2005.

Stephanie Macourt, who collaborated with de Jersey to find the chambers’ new location, expressed that the decision to choose the location was driven by factors including “the building’s prime location near the courts, large floor plates and excellent views across Brisbane”.

Macourt also elaborated that de Jersey was motivated to create a new chamber in response to the limited availability of chambers for upcoming barristers and the absence of a space that caters to the specific needs of today’s barristers.

“If you were a junior barrister looking to find a chamber to work in, there was really nothing available.

“David de Jersey recognised a significant gap in the market and decided it was time to establish a new space – one more modern and tailored to today’s barristers,” Macourt said.

“There was an undersupply of chambers to accommodate members of the commercial bar in Brisbane – particularly junior members.”

Due to a “seven-figure fit out” by Archway Commercial Interiors, all 30 barristers had the opportunity to customise their individual rooms according to their preferences. Additionally, a dedicated room was allocated for each reader.

Macourt also shared that the new George Street Chambers features an “immersive hearing space” that enables “barristers to connect seamlessly to virtual court hearings via video conferencing”.

By incorporating such innovative spaces, Macourt emphasised the chamber’s commitment to embracing a “forward-thinking approach to meeting the evolving demands of legal practice”.

Macourt further said: “With this transaction, George Street Chambers is set to become a cornerstone of Brisbane’s legal fraternity, offering a modern, well-equipped environment that caters to the evolving needs of the city’s barristers and their clients.”
