Dr Joseph Monaghan (pictured) has joined Maddocks as a partner in its planning and environment practice.

Dr Monaghan most recently spent a decade at Holding Redlich, including almost nine years as a partner. At that firm, Maddocks said in a statement, he “built a stellar track record” acting across a large range of prominent and strategic matters for state and local governments and water authorities in Victoria.

He is, the firm continued, a “highly experienced” legal adviser with expertise in planning and environment advocacy in government panels and VCAT and compulsory acquisition, including related litigation for disputed claims.

Joining him at Maddocks is special counsel Tess Kerridge, associate Christopher Watt, and lawyer Jess Critchley-Roy.

The team will be based in Maddocks’ Melbourne office.

Monaghan started at the firm earlier this week, and the balance of the team is also starting imminently.

The news follows the firm’s elevation of four to its partnership in early May and then its promotion of a further 60 professionals later that month.

Speaking about the hires, Maddocks chief executive David Newman said: “Joseph’s appointment is testament to the continued strength of Maddocks’ government practice and its leading reputation.

“To attract a partner of Joseph’s calibre will only add to the depth of our practice and the continued strong relationship we have with our government clients. We are excited for Joseph’s future with Maddocks for many years to come.”

Senior environment and planning partner Maria Marshall said: “Joseph will be instrumental in building our offering across strategic areas of law for the Victorian state and local governments, and Maddocks’ continued focus on this important sector.

“He will join the team which is committed to providing strong service and value to all the departments and agencies for which we act.”

Monaghan said: “Maddocks is a firm that is admired by many for its dedication to the government sector.

“With strength in its practices, which have serviced the government for over 100 years, as well as its market-leading legal process management systems and a strong focus on client service, it is a firm I am excited to be a part of.”
