White & Case adds partner from Maddocks
Global law firm White & Case has bolstered its real estate and M&A capabilities with the hire of a partner from a BigLaw rival.
Alicia Albury (pictured) has joined White & Case LLP in its Sydney office, in a move that will expand the firm’s global real estate and merger and acquisition teams.
Albury advises, White & Case said in a statement, on a wide range of real estate transactions, including property-related restructuring, turnaround and insolvency matters and energy and resources land tenure issues and has over 25 years of experience.
The news follows the firm’s naming of two new Australian partners in mid-November and its appointment of two counsel Down Under later that month.
Speaking about the hire, White & Case partner and global real estate industry group co-head Eugene Leone said: “Energy transition and infrastructure transactions, greenfield developments and M&A and restructuring transactions are all expected to continue at pace in the Australian market, and real estate expertise is essential for these deals.
“In addition, the global surge in data centre M&A deals, driven by private equity investment, is expected to continue through 2024 and beyond, with Australia and the Asia-Pacific a key market for major investors. The addition of Alicia will help grow our real estate team in Australia and Asia-Pacific to drive forward and support our clients on these transactions.”
The firm’s Sydney office executive partner, Kate Perumal, said: “Alicia is a leading real estate partner in the Australian market and brings with her broad experience across a wide range of real estate transactions and assets that will benefit our clients.
“Working closely with our project development and finance, M&A and financial restructuring and insolvency practices in Australia, as well as our Melbourne-based real estate team, Alicia will be an integral part of our deal offering.”
White & Case partner and vice-chair Oliver Brettle said: “Alicia’s strong synergies with a number of our global transactional practices and experience in renewable energy transactions make her an important strategic addition to our Australia practice.
“Looking more widely, we are seeing historic levels of Japanese inbound investment into Australian real estate, and Alicia will work closely with recent funds and real estate lateral partner Eriko Sakata, who joined the firm in May from Linklaters.
“Additionally, with the recent addition of real estate M&A partner John Cahill in New York and Hong Kong from Paul Hastings, there is increased opportunity to support clients on real estate M&A inflows into the Australian market from the US.”
