After practising in commercial law for more than a decade, Johann Spies has joined McCabes as a principal.

Spies joins from Mills Oakley and has extensive experience in corporate and regulatory law for highly regulated clients across multiple jurisdictions and across insurance and financial services regulation and M&A within those sectors.

Before practising at multiple BigLaw firms in Australia, Spies held a country manager role at a legal firm in Laos and practised in Myanmar/Burma, as well as in South Africa, where he led a team at Clyde & Co South Africa.

Speaking about his new appointment, Spies said he was “delighted” to get started.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of the firm and build on the formidable potential of the corporate group,” he said.

This news follows the promotion of 15, including three to principal, in July, as well as the launching of a new internship program for Indigenous law students and lawyers, as reported by Lawyers Weekly in February.

McCabes managing partner Andrew Lacey noted that the appointment marks a “key milestone” in strengthening the firm’s corporate practice group and commercial division.

“Johann’s deep expertise in regulatory and corporate law aligns with our wider vision for the commercial division, making him the ideal candidate to bolster our corporate group,” he said.

“We’re confident that Johann’s leadership skills and broad experience will bring substantial value to our clients.”
