Clayton Utz is growing its Canberra-based partnership from 11 to 15 with the addition of four partners from national practice MinterEllison, including the head of its Canberra office.

Commercial litigation partner Geoff Shaw (who leads MinterEllison’s Canberra office), government partner Amanda Story, real estate partner Edward Campbell, and Commonwealth procurement, contracting and funding partner Suriyaa Rome are all set to leave Minters for Clayton Utz.

The quartet will commence at Clayton Utz in the coming months, the firm noted.

When asked if any lawyers and support staff would be coming across with the new partners, a firm spokesperson said: “We’ll absolutely be growing our team in Canberra, but discussions about that are ongoing.”

The news follows the firm’s hiring of a commercial dispute resolution partner from Holding Redlich earlier this month, its appointment of a senior duo from global rival Baker McKenzie in early July and its promotion of 76 lawyers in the same month.

The appointments, Clayton Utz chief executive partner Emma Covacevich proclaimed, reflect the national firm’s standing in the broader market.

“We’re growing our presence in Canberra in response to an increasing need for complex legal advice in both the private and public sector,” she said.

“The Australian Capital Territory’s economy is growing, and the associated requirement for expert legal advice is evolving.

“With the addition of these four outstanding lawyers to our partnership, we’re expanding our client offering and deepening the expertise we already provide.”

The delivery of strategic legal advice to public and private sector clients, Covacevich continued, requires specific skill sets and expertise.

“Clayton Utz has a proud history of providing this specialised legal guidance, and Geoff, Amanda, Ed and Suriyaa’s experience will complement our Canberra team and allow us to continue providing strategic advice in the evolving Australian Capital Territory and Commonwealth legal market,” she said.
