Peter & Kim has appointed former secretary-general of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA) Deborah Tomkinson to the firm as director of corporate strategy and counsel.

In her new role at the firm, Tomkinson will spearhead strategic initiatives and projects of the global partnership, in addition to undertaking case work as counsel.

Tomkinson was secretary-general at ACICA for 12 years – and immediate past president Georgia Quick said she was instrumental in its strategic growth and development.

“Deborah has been an incredible asset to ACICA over the last 12 years, and Peter & Kim are very lucky to have lured her back into private practice. She has invaluable experience and network and will no doubt do a tremendous job. We wish her every success in her new role,” she said.

Tomkinson has also held roles at national and international law firms both in Australia and the UAE, with a focus on dispute resolution and management, primarily in the construction and infrastructure and energy and resources sectors.

“I am thrilled to join Peter & Kim as it celebrates its fifth anniversary and reflects on the strong growth and recognition it has achieved in that time,” Tomkinson said.

“The team personifies a dynamism and diversity, which, alongside its significant depth of expertise in international arbitration, provides a unique opportunity for me to work with a cohesive group of leading individuals in a purpose-driven environment that fosters excellence and creativity. I look forward to contributing to the next chapter in the firm’s journey.”

Peter & Kim has offices in Geneva, Zurich, Sydney, Seoul, and Singapore, with Tomkinson based in Sydney.

Commenting on the firm’s new appointment, Sydney partner Jim Morrison said that Tomkinson’s experience “fits perfectly within the Peter & Kim team in a time of pivotal growth for the firm”.

“We are particularly excited to have Deborah undertake this role from the Sydney office, reflecting the significance of Australia’s position in the global economy, depth of expertise in complex international disputes and its growing recognition as an arbitration centre,” he said.
