As reported by Lawyers Weekly in early March, Pinsent Masons took a team of eight, including two partners from KPMG Law to launch its own TMT practice.

Susan Kantor (pictured) has joined Pinsent Masons, having come across from Minters, where she spent approximately 10 years, over two stints. She has also served at KPMG.

Kantor is, Pinsent Masons said in a statement, an experienced privacy and data protection lawyer with expertise advising private, public and not-for-profit sector clients on cyber incident response and their security of critical infrastructure obligation, who advises clients on privacy and data protection, including under marketing, data sharing, surveillance, and freedom of information laws.

She will be based in the multinational firm’s Melbourne office.

The appointment continues Pinsent Masons’ recent and significant business growth in Australia.

It follows the firm’s launching of a work health and safety practice in Australia with a team from Sparke Helmore in February, the launching of a restructuring and insolvency practice with a team from Gilchrist Connell in December, as well as an employment and reward practice in August of last year.

Speaking about the hire, Pinsent Masons partner and head of Australia Matthew Croagh said: “The addition of Susan as a leading TMT practitioner continues to build on our investment in services that are of critical importance to our clients.

“Every organisation is grappling with both the threats and opportunities from rapid digitisation and growth of their data assets and global footprint.

“We are committed to making sure we have a brilliant team of TMT lawyers to work alongside them from end to end across the data and technology life cycle to help them be prepared for and deal with these issues in a timely manner to achieve their objectives.”

TMT partner Veronica Scott said: “One of the critical areas of support our clients need is proactive incident response services, which we provide through our follow the sun global 24-hour, 365-day cyber incident response service.”

“Susan’s extensive experience as a trusted and pragmatic advisor in incident response will be instrumental to delivering our services and helping our clients prepare for and effectively navigate these situations.”

Fellow TMT partner James Arnott noted: “Data protection and privacy are fast-moving areas, and the law is struggling to keep pace.”

“These reforms will significantly impact the landscape, and organisations will need nuanced, informed and practical advice to help them prepare to comply with the changes that are coming and meet regulator and community expectations.”
