New Deputy State Coroner joins ahead of Bondi stabbings inquiry
An NSW Local Court magistrate has joined the coronial jurisdiction as the newest Deputy State Coroner ahead of a major inquiry.
As part of the NSW government’s $18 million investment into the jurisdiction and to allow for the mandatory inquest into the Bondi Junction stabbing, Magistrate Kasey Pearce was appointed deputy state coroner.
The funding will also allow the inquiry to proceed with trauma-informed care for victims and their families.
Commenting on the appointment, Attorney-General Michael Daley said Pearce is a “welcome addition” to the court.
“The coronial jurisdiction plays a critical role in our justice system, helping to provide some closure to those who have lost loved ones and making recommendations to help improve the health and safety of people in NSW,” Daley said.
Pearce, an accredited specialist in criminal law, was appointed a magistrate of the NSW Local Court in 2021 following a career in both private practice and for Legal Aid.
She has also worked in several policy positions as a private consultant in crime prevention policy.
The date for the Bondi inquest is yet to be set.
