The legal AI arms race is on. Here's how you can take the lead

You’ve heard the hype. You’ve sat through AI seminars, heard from speakers, and read Gartner’s prediction that global legal tech will be worth $50 billion by 2027, all because of Generative AI.

What you don’t know though, is what keeps you up at night:

How can legal AI help me today?

That’s what we’ll explore in this article.

Legal AI

Legal AI falls broadly into two categories:

  1. Integrated legal AI, which is purpose-built for use within your practice management system.
  2. Standalone legal AI, often developed independently of your practice management system or workflow.

“The major difference with LEAP’s legal AI is that it’s fully integrated within LEAP,” explained CEO Donna Broadley. “Unlike other AI, our integration of legal AI makes it immediately useful because it’s not an add-on. You access our AI from within your LEAP matter, and it can generate chronologies, do legal research, draft and search for relevant precedents - or generate new ones.”

LEAP includes four types of integrated legal AI.

1. LawY: Your trusted legal research & drafting assistant

LawY helps you with the first draft of your work,” explained lawyer Jenna Downy. “It shifts our focus as lawyers. Everyone, from partners and senior associates to junior lawyers and paralegals, will be more involved in reviewing what AI produces rather than doing the first draft themselves.”

Downy helped curate the specialised LawY legal knowledge base, alongside retired judge Garry Watts.

LawY is your firm’s trusted AI legal assistant, addressing your legal questions with instant AI-generated answers that can then be vetted and verified by experienced and qualified lawyers. Save time on tasks such as legal research, reviewing case law, drafting documents or affidavits, and more.

“The benefit of LawY is that if you've got a question that you're unsure of, you've got a resource that you know is going to be verified by qualified practitioners,” said Paul Fawcett, Solicitor Director, Catalyst Family Lawyers.

Questions Fawcett’s firm has asked LawY include:

  • Can you prepare an affidavit?
  • Can you prepare a letter in respect of a certain fact scenario?

“I can see that, over time, it's going to make our jobs much more streamlined,” said Fawcett.

2. Matter AI: Instant answers from your matters

Matter AI intelligently examines your LEAP matter correspondence, providing instant insights.

“When I was a solicitor, we often engaged a particular barrister who loved a timeline,” said Jessica Wilson, LEAP Renewals Manager. “This would take me hours to review all of the correspondence and compile a chronological timeline. Matter AI can generate a chronology in around 10 seconds. It can also compare multiple documents for inconsistencies, and draft documents from within your matter.”

3. Matter Activity Recording: Effortless Time Tracking

"Forget scrambling to recall what you did last week," says Brooke Limmer. "With AI such as Matter Activity Recording, you can concentrate on doing your legal work whilst LEAP automatically records your time in the background.”

“Our intelligent time recording automatically logs your billable hours, eliminating the need to manually make time entries. This simplifies billing and provides insights into your overall productivity, so you can focus on high-value work.”

4. LEAP Generator: Draft Documents and Precedents with ease

You can produce a legal letter, client email or form with ease using LEAP’s Generator. Drafting documents can be time-consuming, and even trying to find existing precedents that fit your specific situation can be a challenge. LEAP simplifies this process.

Through the Generator, you can input the type of document you wish to create. will allow you to choose from a letter, email or form previously created by your firm. Or you can select a LawY precedent verified by qualified lawyers, or have LawY’s AI generate a new one. You can also explore what’s available within your By Lawyers subscription.

LEAP’s legal AI is now live in Australia, the UK, and North America.

“The biggest difference with LEAP’s legal AI is that it’s so seamlessly integrated within your workflow,” said Wenee Yap, Senior Marketing Manager of LEAP Property. “You don’t need to click out of LEAP to use our legal AI. Our AI is also designed to work at scale across all you do in a day, rather than fix a highly specific use case like due diligence AI.”

Updates to LEAP Family Court Forms and Family Law Matter Database Designs

“LEAP is excited to announce updates to our Family Court Forms and Family Law Matter Types,” said Downy.

These updates have been made to improve family law matter types in LEAP and better recognise the workflow of family lawyers. Notable updates include Tables Updates to simplify default LEAP matter details, a new Child Support matter type to better accommodate matters dealing specifically with Child Support issues, and Calculated Critical Dates, which will now automatically populate important dates and time limits.

With updated Court Forms in BETA, including the Application for Consent Orders (FED & WA), Financial Statement (FED & WA), and Balance Sheet (FED), LEAP users can anticipate greater convenience with data input, and efficiency with new automated features.

“As we continue to evolve and refine our platform to cater to your legal needs, stay tuned for more updates and enhancements,” said Downy.
