Albanese announces next Governor-General
Samantha Mostyn AO will become the 28th Australian Governor-General and the second woman to ever hold the position.
In the announcement to media, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commended the businesswoman for “enduring qualities of equality, fairness and a responsibility to build a better future”.
Mostyn was appointed an officer of the Order of Australia in 2021 for her service to women, business and the community.
While commissioner of the AFL, she was the driving force behind establishing the women’s competition.
Mostyn has also held a number of prominent roles in community organisations, including Beyond Blue, Reconciliation Australia, the National Mental Health Commission, and the Diversity Council.
Diversity Council chief executive Lisa Annese said the appointment “is a testament to her remarkable leadership and dedication to advancing gender equality in our nation”.
“Her extensive experience and unwavering commitment make her an outstanding choice for this prestigious role,” Annese said.
Mostyn said she was “deeply honoured” by the appointment.
“I will never underestimate or take for granted the expectations that come with high office, and I am ready to serve with integrity, compassion and respect,” Mostyn said.
The appointment was made with King Charles III’s approval.
Mostyn will replace outgoing Governor-General David Hurley on 1 July.
