The first-ever Partner Summit is a brand-new initiative from Lawyers Weekly taking place on Thursday, 20 June 2024 at The Star, Sydney. Click here to buy tickets.

The summit has been carefully curated for law firm partners, partner equivalents, and relevant business leaders to broaden their professional capabilities at a time when strong leadership and a holistic perspective on professional services management have become critical.

It is designed for new, emerging, and established partners, who can refine their skills and understand how to capitalise on and address a range of opportunities and challenges that are presented to them in their roles and organisations.

Attendees can reignite their passion for the law by listening to inspiring keynote sessions and thought-provoking discussions as successful industry speakers share their stories and tips.

The jam-packed agenda has been produced to enable partners to think beyond the traditional understandings of management and practical expertise and enhance their capacity for business development, emotional intelligence, and innovation.

A group of speakers who are experts in their fields will offer strategies on how partners could manage a high-performing team, increase efficiencies, and achieve long-term success and will paint a picture on the future of generative AI and how it could improve partner practice.

In the first session, Professor Richard Susskind OBE KC (Hon) – who is a renowned author on the future of legal services – will join the summit virtually for a thought-provoking session and live Q&A on how the competitive legal sector is constantly evolving and the drivers of change in the way legal services are delivered (including cost pressures and technology).

He will also touch on the impact of artificial intelligence on the legal sector; outline how the jobs market could evolve in the future; the innovations he is seeing in the market; and strategies legal professionals could consider, including diversification, optimisation, and transformation.

Following this, Penrith Panthers head coach Ivan Cleary will deliver a powerful session on how partners can create a high-performing team by developing their skills, creating new opportunities while protecting against risks, and leading a permanent hybrid workplace, while being mindful of burnout.

Domain’s chief legal and transformation officer Catriona McGregor will unpack how law firms can ensure they are the chosen external firm for general counsel and outline what GCs are seeking from their external law firm providers.

McGregor will then detail how law firms can bill appropriately to clients and consider alternative fee arrangements, provide practical and tailored advice on how something may impact their business, and be transparent in their communication with clients (including informing them about prevention and preparation as soon as the firm becomes aware of an issue in their business).

In another session, Australian entrepreneur and executive chairman of financial services company Yellow Brick Road, Mark Bouris, will offer attendees tips on how they can build their law practice into a successful business.

The summit includes a panel session that will focus on how law firms could streamline processes to become more efficient and deliver unparalleled client experiences while driving sustainable growth.

Speakers will explain how law firms can use timeboxing to allocate blocks of time to specific tasks, invest in technologies like invoicing systems and research and analytical data for predictive measures, and reduce manual administrative duties in order to focus on core competencies, including client consultations, court appearances, case research, and strategic planning.

In addition, attendees will hear about how to invest in people and culture, embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion, focus on wellness and work/life balance, and adopt a client-centric approach to achieve long-term success in their firms.

Lawyers Weekly will reveal more speakers in the coming weeks.

Throughout the Partner Summit, attendees will have the opportunity to network and create powerful connections with leaders of the legal profession, as well as other legal partners and thought leaders.

The inaugural Partner Summit 2024 will take place on Thursday, 20 June 2024 at The Star, Sydney.
