Family lawyer Van Cooney, 77, was reportedly shot inside his firm, Van Cooney Lawyers, around 12:50pm on Wednesday (28 February).

Emergency services arrived on the scene within minutes, and the area around Castlereagh Street in Sydney’s CBD was shut down.

Police said the alleged gunman, Sinve Vulic, was held down by five or six workers.

It was reported Mr Cooney assisted in holding Mr Vulic down.

Detective Inspector David El-Badawi told reporters the workers “were very brave”.

Police alleged Mr Vulic was carrying a bag with a sawn-off semi-automatic rifle and a holding pistol.

At the Day Street Police Station, police executed a further search and allegedly uncovered a rifle and ammunition.

Mr Vulic has been charged with shooting with intent to murder, two counts of acquiring a pistol subject to a firearms prohibition order, two counts of possessing a loaded firearm, endangering life in a non-public place, and two counts of possessing an unauthorised prohibited firearm.

He was refused bail overnight and is due to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday (29 February).
